A Chicana Farmworker's Daughter
Olga Talamante grew up in Gilroy, California, where her family worked the fields after migrating from Mexicali, Mexico. She excelled in school, earned a degree in Latin American Studies from UC Santa Cruz, and found her political voice in the Chicana/o movement. She joined MEChA, threw herself into the United Farm Workers cause, and eventually traveled to Argentina to work alongside young leftist activists on health and education projects.
Arrested, Tortured, Unbroken
In November 1974, Talamante was arrested with thirteen Argentine activists in Azul, tortured over four days, and imprisoned at the dawn of Argentina's brutal "dirty war." The Olga Talamante Defense Committee mobilized across the United States, petitioning Congress and the State Department for her release. She was freed on March 27, 1976 — nationally known, and more determined than ever.
A Life of Service
Back in the Bay Area, Talamante spent decades fighting for her community — as founding Executive Director of the Chicana/Latina Foundation, as co-chair of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and as a mentor to hundreds of Latina leaders. Her honors include the César Chávez Legacy Award and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of San Francisco. She remains one of the most consequential Chicana activists of her generation.
¡Chicanísima!: The Opera
Composer Carla Lucero — whose operas have been commissioned by LA Opera, Opera Parallèle, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Opera Birmingham, Opera UCLA, The Ebell of Los Angeles, Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and Mercury Theater — captures Talamante's journey in a chamber opera originally commissioned by Quinteto Latino.
Opera Cultura presents the work as a one-hour staged concert featuring soprano Alexa Sessler, mezzo-soprano Jessica Gonzalez-Rodriguez, and tenor Sergio Gonzalez, with additional arias by Latina composers and librettists.
