From Shepherds to Kings: A Journey Through Mexico’s Holiday Traditions

ree

Every December in several towns across Mexico, something magical begins to unfold. As the nights grow colder and the streets glow with warm lantern light, families gather to watch a yearly ritual: the pastorela—a dramatic retelling of Los Pastores, the story of humble shepherds who hear the news of a child’s birth and set out into the night to find him.”

These plays aren’t just performances. They’re full of laughter, music, and a little mischief. It’s a tradition that feels both sacred and familiar, passed from grandparents to grandchildren, shaped by each community that brings it to life.

And just as the shepherds finally reach the manger, another journey begins. After the shepherds come the Reyes—the Three Kings traveling from faraway lands, following a star that lights the winter sky. In Mexico, Día de los Reyes on January 6 marks their arrival, and with it the end of the holiday season. Sometimes, children leave their shoes out the night before, hoping for gifts. Families cut into Rosca de Reyes, holding their breath to see who finds the little figurine hidden inside. It is a day filled with warmth, sweetness, and celebration.

In many communities, these traditions—Pastores and Reyes—flow into one another like chapters of the same story. First the shepherds arrive, then the kings. First the humble, then the royal. First laughter and journey, then gifts and blessing. Together, they paint a rich portrait of the holiday season in Mexico: full of faith, joy, community, and music.

And this is the spirit behind our upcoming celebration:Cantar con los Reyes — January 4, 2026 at the San Jose Woman’s Club. It’s a chance for all of us—families, friends, elders, and little ones—to gather and sing together as we honor this beautiful tradition. Led by Mariachi and Opera artist Omar Alejandro, the event brings the warmth of the Reyes celebration to our community.
