Information about Bless Me, Ultima :
Composer and Artistic Director Héctor Armienta has written a new Mexican-American opera based on Rudolfo Anaya’s novel, Bless Me, Ultima. The novel, published in 1972, is considered one of the best in Mexican-American literature and is one of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Reads. In 2013, the novel was made into a movie. Anaya, who resides in Albuquerque, NM, was recently awarded the National Humanities Medal by Former President Barack Obama for his literature. The text is primarily in English with occasional Spanish phrases.
Antonio Marez is a young boy when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past-a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world...and will nurture the birth of his soul.
